netra

Privacy policy

Last updated 22 October 2026. Applies to the Netra apps for iPhone, iPad, Android, Android TV, Fire TV, LG TV and Samsung TV, and to the Netra web player.

The short version

  • You don't need an account to use Netra, and Netra has no ads and no analytics.
  • Your playlists, server addresses, usernames and passwords are stored on your device only. We never store or read them.
  • Netra provides no content. It connects straight from your device to the sources you add.
  • A few optional features use a small service we run at api.netra.digital. It holds nothing for longer than 10 minutes and keeps no history. Details below.
  • Questions: support@netra.digital.

Who we are

Netra is a media player. Netra is made by Netra Digital ("we", "us"). You can reach us at support@netra.digital. Netra does not provide, include or sell any content, channels, streams or subscriptions. You add your own sources, from services you are entitled to use.

What stays on your device

When you use Netra, the app keeps the following on your device and nowhere else:

On Android, passwords are held in the Android Keystore-backed encrypted storage. On televisions that have no secure keystore (LG and Samsung), saved passwords are kept in the app's private local storage, which the app cannot encrypt. In the web player they are kept in your browser's local storage. Remove a playlist, or choose Sign out, and its details are deleted from the device. Uninstalling the app deletes everything it stored.

Connections Netra makes

To play something, Netra contacts the address you gave it (your playlist host, your server, or a stream link) directly from your device. We are not part of that connection and do not see it. The service at that address sees your IP address and what you request, and its own privacy policy applies. Images and streams listed in your playlist are fetched from the addresses in the playlist, which may belong to other companies.

The Netra service (api.netra.digital)

Four optional features use a small service we run on Cloudflare's network. It does not need an account and the service does not write logs of requests, addresses, streams or credentials. As our hosting provider, Cloudflare handles network information such as your IP address when delivering a request.

1. Sending a playlist to another device

When you use "Receive from your phone" or "Send to another device", the receiving device shows a QR code and a short code. The sending device encrypts the playlist details (name, address and login) on the device with a one-time key that only the receiving device holds, then posts the encrypted result to the service. The service cannot read it. It keeps the encrypted blob for 10 minutes or less and deletes it as soon as the receiving device collects it. Short-lived request counters, kept in memory and linked to your IP address, limit abuse; they are not stored.

2. Casting to Chromecast

When you cast a stream whose address starts with http://, a Chromecast cannot always fetch it directly. In that case the Netra apps send the stream address through the service's /media bridge, which relays the video to the Chromecast. Cast posters that use http:// go the same way. The stream address (which, with some servers, contains your login) and the video pass through the service in transit only. Nothing is saved. Streams that use https:// go straight to the Chromecast. If you don't cast, this is not used.

3. The web player (app.netra.digital)

A browser can't connect directly to most media servers, so the web player sends its requests to your server through the service, which relays them and does not keep them. This includes the username and password you enter for your source, which pass through in transit. Your sources are saved in your browser only.

4. The demo

"Try the demo" loads a small sample library from the service. It needs no login and sends us nothing about you.

Camera, microphone and other permissions

First-seen date

Netra records the date you first opened the app, once, on your device, so that early users can be given early-user benefits later. It is a date only, with no personal details. On iPhone and iPad it is kept in the device keychain, which can sync through your own iCloud Keychain. On Android it is included in your device's Google backup if you have backup turned on. On other devices it stays in the app's local storage. We do not receive it.

No analytics, advertising or tracking

Netra contains no analytics, advertising, attribution or tracking code, and no crash-reporting service. We do not build profiles, sell data or share data with advertisers. Netra uses open-source players (libVLC, Media3 and the browser's own player) that run entirely on your device. On iPhone, iPad and Android phones and tablets, casting uses Google's Cast software, which is governed by Google's privacy policy when you use it.

Crash and diagnostic logs

Netra does not send crash reports or logs to us. The optional "stream info" overlay in Settings shows playback details on screen only. If you ever choose to share a log with us for support, we use it only to fix the problem you describe. Apple, Google, Amazon, LG and Samsung may offer developers aggregate crash statistics from users who have switched that on in their device settings. That is controlled by those companies and your device settings, not by Netra.

Children

Netra is a general-purpose player and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from anyone.

Your choices and your rights

Because the information Netra uses stays on your device, you control it: delete a playlist, sign out, clear the app's data, or uninstall. We hold no account or personal profile about you, so there is nothing for us to export or delete. If you believe we hold information about you, write to support@netra.digital and we will respond.

Security

The playlist-sending feature uses end-to-end encryption between your two devices. Your server may use plain http://, which is not encrypted; that is set by your server, not by Netra. Please use unique passwords for services you sign in to.

Changes

If our practices change, we will update this page and the date above. Material changes will also appear in the app's release notes.
